Inching closer to independence

Robert Bensemann's eyes have four legs and blonde hair. The 67-year-old is legally blind and relies on his 18-month-old guide-dog Inchy to see for him and guide him around Richmond on his daily outings. Mr Bensemann got Inchy in November, four months after his previous guide-dog James died of thyroid cancer. Tomorrow is the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind's annual Red Puppy Appeal day, which will see red-coated puppies on streets around the country to raise awareness of the cause.

Ship awaits go-ahead for Japan return

A large car carrier with 23 crew that left Japan to unload cargo in New Zealand just before the devastating earthquake on March 11 is lying in Tasman Bay without a home to go to for now. The 183-metre Triumph, which can carry up to 5000 cars, was in transit for New Zealand when the earthquake struck. It arrived in Auckland a few days later and off-loaded cars before heading to Wellington and Nelson, where it has been in limbo since March 21.

Cup coup will have huge spinoffs for region

Nelson has scored a third Rugby World Cup match and about 8000 Australians are expected to be heard here cheering. The city council yesterday confirmed the Australian game against Russia at Trafalgar Park on October 1. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio said the city stood to earn about $12 million from the three games now being played here. "This is our chance to shine. We have to make the most of it."

Christchurch matches rescheduled after quake

Following an assessment of damage caused by the Christchurch earthquake, organisers have reluctantly rescheduled eight matches. On February 22, the city of Christchurch was hit by a devastating 6.3 magnitude earthquake which caused multiple fatalities and widespread damage to the city and surrounding suburbs. Since then, Tournament partners have conducted a thorough assessment of the damage to the match venue Stadium Christchurch and associated infrastructure such as hotels and training facilities.
